UH Selected as a Finalist of the Proposed DHS Center of Excellence for Command, Control and Interoperability
The Carnegie-Mellon University, UH and Brown University Team was selected by the Department of Homeland Security to have a site visit for the Proposed DHS Center of Excellence (COE) for Command, Control and Interoperability (C2I) on Janurary 5, 2009
SWTC Advisor Adrian Garcia is becoming the first Hispanic elected to serve as the Harris County sheriff
SWTC Advisor Adrian Garcia is becoming the first Hispanic elected to serve as the Harris County sheriff. As a former chairman of the Houston City Council's public safety committee and a retired Houston police officer, Mayor Pro Tem Garcia will inherit an office with some 2,800 deputies and a more than $300 million operations budget.He said he hopes to add a SWAT team and a helicopter unit. Garcia's election means the City of Houston must hold a special election next May to fill his City Council seat, according to state law.

The mission of the National Center for Island, Maritime and Extreme Environment Security (CIMES) is to perform basic research in areas that will improve safeguards for key infrastructures in island and extreme environments as well as provide important environmental information in times of natural or man-made emergencies. CIMES is eligible to receive a grant of up to $2 million per year over the next four to six years

The UH Center for Public Policy (CPP) presented their statistical findings of the non-medical consequences of Conductive Energy Devices (CEDs), commonly referred to as Tasers or stun guns at the Houston City Hall, http://www.uh.edu/cpp/taser.htm. CPP was part of an independent research group commissioned by the office of City Controller Annise Parker to examine CED incidence data provided by the Houston Police Department

The May-June issue of the Port of Houston Authority Magazine published an article on the proposed Houston Ship Channel Security District.The University of Houston’s Southwest Public Safety Technology Center (SWTC) played a notable role in the creation of the legislation to create the Houston Ship Channel Security District. The idea was first put forth by the Port Strategic Security Council (PSSC) which is now the Houston Ship Channel Security Council. In 2006, Harris County Judge Robert Eckels appointed Pat Bellamy to chair this group.
